A MUSIC/BOXING WEEKEND FOR AL BERNSTEIN
IN LAS VEGAS
Hall of Fame Boxing announcer Al Bernstein will have a busy weekend on February 16 and 17 in Las Vegas. Bernstein will do his customary job on Saturday, Feb. 17 when he is ringside to announce the SHOWTIME telecast of the Danny Garcia-Brandon Rios, David Benavidez-Ronald Gavril and Yordenis Ugas-Ray Robinson fights at Mandalay Bay. Kicking off the weekend on Friday, he will again revisit his musical side when he’ll sing more than a dozen tunes while co-hosting the Kenny Davidsen’s Celebrity Cabaret Show at the Tuscany Hotel and Casino.
This music/boxing doubleheader is nothing new to Bernstein, he has done it before, originating the concept in the 1980’s and 1990’s with major pay-per-view contests at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Bernstein feels that the action in the Benavidez-Gavril fight, a rematch of their 2017 fight of the year candidate, could well be reminiscent of those exciting matches of ‘80’s and ‘90’s he did featuring great champions like Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns. Bernstein said, “The fight they had last year (a Super Middleweight title match won by Benavidez in a split decision) was filled with excitement and fought at a very high-level. I expect the same thing when they battle it out again. Benavidez is a young champion with unlimited potential and Gavril is a talented veteran who fought the best fight of his career in their first fight. This fight should be terrific.” The SHOWTIME tripleheader begins at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT
On Friday night Bernstein will pay tribute to a different kind of champion when he and other talented singers from Las Vegas honor the legendary Nat King Cole by singing tunes from his extensive list of hits. The music starts at 9 p.m. in the Piazza Lounge, where every Friday night Kenny Davidsen and his band welcome a different co-host and talented singers from Las Vegas. This is Al’s third time as a co-host of the show. Al said, “Kenny has created a unique and exciting atmosphere where each week just about every genre of music is performed by many talented singers. I’m thrilled to join them in showcasing the music of one of the very best performers of the Great American Songbook—Nat King Cole. I’m glad we have an event to kick off the boxing weekend and I know a lot of the boxing fans and boxing personalities will be on-hand. It should be a fun evening.”
