“Mosley KO’s Mayorga with One Tick Left in the 12th!”

by Frank Gonzalez Jr.

In a very sloppy Jr. Middleweight contest Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson California, former titlist “Sugar” Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KO’s) labored through 12 ugly rounds against wild-man, former welterweight titlist, Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) until knocking him down and out with one second left in the 12th round.

PAVLIK BEGINS YEAR NO. 2

One year ago tomorrow, KELLY "The Ghost" PAVLIK transformed himself from the No. 1 middleweight contender into world middleweight champion and boxing folk hero.  It was on Saturday, September 29, 2007, in Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, that Pavlik pulled himself off the canvas after a second round knockdown, served up by undefeated defending champion Jermain Taylor, to come roaring back, knocking out Taylor in the seventh round.  More than just the passing of the torch for one of boxing's most hallowed titles, Pavlik's victory single-handedly rejuvenated interest in the sport.  Beyond his punching power and gun-slinger style of fighting, media and fans alike have embraced Pavlik for his dedication to civic duty and his self-deprecating sense of humor, which first surfaced hours after his world title victory when he made fun of himself after he discovered on his flight home to Youngstown that he had left his purse check in his Atlantic City hotel room!

JONES STOPS ARSLAN

David Hudson and Jose Santiago
Fightnews.com

In an extremely brutal fight, Guillermo Jones (36-3-2, 27 KOs) dethroned reigning WBA cruiserweight world champion Firat Arslan (29-5-1, 18 KOs) via tenth round TKO on Saturday night at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany. Aslan pressed the action in a high tempo contest in which both fighters connected with good shots early on. The much taller Jones progressively busted up the face of Arslan with razor sharp punching while the superbly conditioned Arslan returned many hard connects on his end, as well. Referee Luis Pabon had the ring doctor examine Arslan's cuts in round seven. Jones continued to attack viciously and Pabon finally stopped the bout in round ten. Time was 2:33. "The Incredible Expanding Man" Jones had previously challenged twice for the WBA super welterweight title in 1998.

Unbeaten super middleweight Denis Inkin (34-0, 24 KOs) claimed the vacant WBO 168lb world championship former held by Joe Calzaghe. Inkin won a twelve round unanimous decision over Fulgencio Zuniga (21-2-1, 18 KOs).

Juan Carlos Gomez is the new no. 1 contender on the WBC heavyweight champion title. "The Black Panther" clearly outboxed Vladimir Virchis, knocking down "The Hunter" in the fifth to take home a unanimous decision win. "I told everybody before that it's Showtime!" stated Gomez. "I beat Virchis and more importantly I beat Klaus-Peter Kohl and Universum. Now I will go on to finally fulfill my great dream of becoming heavyweight champion of the world!" After beating Virchis, Gomez is the mandatory challenger for the winner of October 11th clash between Vitali Klitschko and reigning WBC champion Samuel Peter. "I would prefer to take on Vitali but I will beat whoever comes my way", adds Gomez.

SALITA TITLE FIGHT OFF??

The co-feature of the November 8th MSG card featuring Joe Calzaghe against Roy Jones Jr. was supposed to feature Dmitriy Salita's chance at a world title against WBA super lightweight champion Andreas Kotelnik, however a rib injury in Kotelnik's September 13th fight has apparently scrapped that fight. "I am ready to finalize the fight immediately," said Salita, who is training in the Poconos. "It's up to his people to contact my promoter, Roy Jones' Square Ring, and get this fight on. The ball is in his court, step up, give the fans what they want to see!" If Kotelnik is not available, Salita is expected to remain on the card.

MACK STOPS PITTMAN

In front of an enthusiastic crowd at The National Guard Armory, WBA #9 Ranked Light Heavyweight, Yusaf Mack unveiled a piston-like jab over the first five rounds to keep Omar Pittman in check until Mack unleashed a right hand assault that was capped off by a thudding knockdown and subsequent stoppage at 2:59 of round six to capture both the NABA and Pennsylvania state Light Heavyweight championships.
When asked about the knockout, a jubilant Mack responded, "When  I saw him getting tired, his hands were dropping and the right hand was working.  Everyone knows that my right is the helicopter."
That fight capped a championship doubleheader that saw Derrick “Pooh” Ennis score a convincing ten round unanimous decision over Troy Browning to secure the Pennsylvania State & USBA Regional Jr. Middleweight title by scores 100-90, 100-90 and 98-92.

WHY ISN'T LUPE PINTOR IN THE INTERNATIONAL BOXING HALL OF FAME ?
by Jim Amato

This is a story that you may say is regrettable. You may say it is sad or that it is a simple oversight. Or you may call it what it is, a travesty ! If you look at the credentials of Lupe Pintor it is plain to see that they far exceed those of some that are enshrined in the I.B.H.O.F. This is a proud warrior who should have been inducted years ago but sadly he sits on the outside looking in.

ESCOBEDO STOPS SALCIDO

In an important battle between lightweight prospects, Vicente Escobedo (19-1, 12 KOs) impressively KO'd previously unbeaten Dominic Salcido (16-1, 8 KOs) in round six on Friday night at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California. Escobedo hurt Salcido with a big left hook then dropped him with a brutal follow-up barrage. After more punishment from Escobedo, the bout was waved off at 42 seconds of round six.

CALZAGHE GIVES UP WBO TITLE

The WBO informed promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl this afternoon that Joe Calzaghe has given up his WBO super middleweight championship. As a result, Saturday's clash between unbeaten Denis Inkin (33-0, 24 KOs) and Fulgencio Zuniga (21-2-1, 18 KOs) at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg will now be for the vacant WBO world championship. "For me it makes no great difference," stated Inkin. "The opponent remains equally strong. But now I'm just one step away from my life's big dream. This gives me an extra boost as it's now in my hands and there's no need to wait for Joe's decision." Trainer Magomed Schaburow added "Super! After receiving this message the whole team leaped into the air. We're happy about the chance and now we're concentrating on the difficult task and want using this world title opportunity."

KING ARTHUR RESPONDS TO MARQUEZ

King Arthur Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs) is pleased to reassure Raul Marquez that he is not ignoring him at all. Earlier this week, the 37-year-old mandatory challenger complained about being overlooked by the undefeated IBF middleweight champion, who will make his eighth title defense in Bamberg on October 4. “Abraham´s people are looking beyond me,” Marquez claimed. “I want to spoil all that talk about him fighting Pavlik or Wright in his next fight.”
Even though there might be a potential mega-fight on the horizon, King Arthur vowed to take one step at a time. “I am not ignoring Marquez at all,” the 28-year-old stated. “Two exhausting training sessions a day, an exhausting training camp as well as a tough eight-week preparation period tell a different story. If I was ignoring him, I would be lying on the beach in Florida to enjoy the sun. I would not even be responding to his provocative statement!”
King Arthur admitted he was full of respect for his Marquez. “He is an accomplished fighter with a great deal of experience,” King Arthur said.
“But this would not be my eighth title defense if I had underestimated any of my opponents. He is not the mandatory challenger for nothing. Still there is no chance he can beat me.”
Abraham will make his first fight since celebrating a successful US debut. Back in June, he knocked out Edison Miranda in the fourth round of their rematch. “I am keen to return to the US as soon as possible – not just for vacation but for business. After stopping Marquez, I will make big fights in the US.”

PAVLIK-HOPKINS UNDERCARD SET

Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall is three weeks away from “Unstoppable” -- the light heavyweight rumble between undefeated world middleweight champion KELLY “The Ghost” PAVLIK and legendary two-division world champion BERNARD “The Executioner” HOPKINS, yet fight fans who are eagerly anticipating the showdown have more reason to want October 18 to get here quickly as an undercard packed with talent is planned for the show. The televised undercard features three compelling fights featuring fighters with a combined record of 168-12-2 (111 KOs) and a combined winning percentage exceeding 92%. WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano defends his title against top contender Billy Dib, undefeated NABO bantamweight champion Abner Mares battles Luis Melendez and in a WBC middleweight title elimination bout, Marco Antonio Rubio takes on Enrique Ornelas.
Presented by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, in association with Caesars Atlantic City, “Unstoppable” takes place Saturday, October 18 at Boardwalk Hall and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

PROSPECTS PUT IT ON THE LINE

In recent years, when talk turned to California’s most promising prospects, the name of 2004 US Olympian Vicente Escobedo and amateur standout Dominic Salcido have usually been part of the conversation. Tonight Escobedo will face Salcido in perhaps one of the best Telefutura cards of 2008. The fast hands and feet plus the ring savvy of Escobedo (18-1, 11 KOs) have drawn comparison to a young Oscar de la Hoya. On the other side of the ring, Salcido (16-0, 8 KOs) has been unstoppable, going 7-0 in 2007 and kicking off 2008 in June with an eight round win over Luis Arceo.
"These are the events that fans love and for good reason," said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. "This card has two of the best prospects in the game fighting each other and it's make it or break it for them. I can't wait for the first bell to ring."
In the televised co-main event, rising junior featherweight star Nestor Rocha (19-1, 6 KOs) will battle hardcore veteran Javier Cintron (14-10-2, 10 KOs).

Weights:
Vicente Escobedo 134 vs. Dominic Salcido 134.5
Nestor Rocha 120.5 vs. Javier Cintron 121
Ashanti Jordan 224 vs. John Clark 284.5

MACK READY FOR TONIGHT

Mack Attack - Yusaf’s Primed and Ready For the Battle Of Philadelphia.

NABA Light Heavyweight Champion, Yusaf Mack 25-2-2 (15KOs), returned to his former home gym, The James Shuler Memorial Gym, this week to undertake his final preparations with his former manager/trainer Percy ‘Buster’ Custus for this Friday’s title defense against fellow Philadelphian, Omar ‘Pit Bull’ Pittman 15-4-1 (8KOs), at the National Guard Armory in Philadelphia.
Mack, the former USBA/UBA Super Middleweight Champion, stepped up to Light Heavyweight earlier this year and in just his second fight at his new weight beat Brooklyn, New York’s Daniel Judah 22-3-3 (10KOs)  in a tough battle, which took place in Judah’s own back yard, to secure the NABA title.
At his previous weight, Mack, always struggled to make the 168lbs required for super middleweight, often he would be left weak and exhausted working off up to 12lbs to make the weight. Not so these days, the higher weight clearly suits his 6’1” muscular frame, he appears fitter, stronger and, more importantly, totally focused on the task ahead.
Mack is clearly fired up, throughout his workout session he was constantly pacing the gym floor like a caged tiger when not pummeling the stuffing out of the heavy bag or seemingly trying to smash Buster’s hands off during very aggressive pads work.

WILLIAMS DESTROYS KOLLE

Fighting for the first time in the middleweight division (he says that he cannot find anyone in the welterweight division that wants to fight him) WBO welterweight champion Paul 'The Punisher' Williams (35-1, 26 KOs) destroyed Andy Kolle (17-2, 12 KOs) in round one on Thursday night at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California. A massive right hook dropped Kolle right through the bottom ropes just 97 seconds into the fight.

*****
Unbeaten heavyweight (really heavy as he came in  weighing 258.5) contender Cristobal 'The Nightmare' Arreola (25-0, 22 KOs) scored a three round beatdown of Israel 'King Kong' Garcia (19-2, 11 KOs). Referee Lou Moret jumped in to stop Arreola's attack at 1:11 of the round.
*****
Rico Ramos TKO1 Manuel Sarabia
Bayan Jargal KO2 Francisco Rios Gil
Derrick Wilson KO1 Emiliano Mendoza

CONCEPCION STOPS CARO

With the bout on the verge of being stopped due to his left eye being swollen shut, super bantamweight contender Bernabe Concepcion (27-1, 16 KOs) unleashed a desperate and brutal assault on Giovanni Caro (11-5-4) to knock out Caro in round eight on Thursday night at the Sycuan Casino in El Cajon, California. The end came at the 2:35 mark.
*****
Former world champion Brian Viloria (23-2, 13 KOs) won a workmanlike eight round unanimous decision over Javier Lagos (15-13-2). Viloria is now scheduled to take on Ulises Solis for the IBF jr flyweight championship in December.
*****
Junior welterweight Dennis Laurente (30-3, 16 KOs) scored a TKO over Arturo Urena (20-16, 12 KOs) when Urena could not come out for round seven due to a cut under his right eye.
*****
The card was the first ever promoted by Manny Pacquiao Promotions, along with co-promoter, Sycuan Ringside Promotions.

WARRIORS SIGNS POLISH PROSPECT

Every four years, the ritual is the same, as promoters look to inject the sport of professional boxing with the top amateur talent in the game.  This year, Seminole Warriors Boxing has teamed up with prominent Polish promoter Bullit Knockout Promotions to sign a young man they believe is the future of the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions – Artur Szpilka.
*****
“Of all the amateur fighters we’ve been watching over the last few months, there was no question in my mind that Artur was one of best,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing. “He’s got a great style for the pro game, a maturity you don’t find in too many young pros, and the determination to work hard and win a pro title.  We’re excited to see how he progresses, and I think he’s going to be a popular fighter not only in the United States and Europe, but around the world.”
The 19 year old prospect, a Polish National Amateur Champion as well as the European Union Champion, will make his professional debut in October on a date to be announced shortly.
“I feel a great responsibility to my country and my fans to deliver great performances and to eventually win a world championship,” said Szpilka.  “With Bullit Knockout Promotions and Seminole Warriors Boxing on my side, I’m confident that great things are in my future.”

WBO welterweight champion Paul ‘The Punisher’ Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) makes his first move toward fighting anyone from 147 to 168 pounds - a weight span that he wants to take him from welterweight to super middleweight, simultaneously – when he makes the start of what he hopes will be his historic run tomorrow at the Soboba Casino when he jumps two weight classes from welterweight to the middleweight division challenging upset-minded Andy Kolle (17-1, 12 KOs) in the main event of Goossen Tutor Promotions’ first event to be televised on the VERSUS network (9 PM EST/6 PM PST).

HAYE TO MEET BARRETT

After months of speculation and numerous pull-outs, former world cruiserweight champion David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye has today been able to officially name the heavyweight opponent he will face on November 15 at The O2 Arena in London. The chosen heavyweight is New York contender Monte ‘Two Gunz’ Barrett, ranked at number six by the WBO and a former WBC and WBA world heavyweight title challenger.
In Barrett's last fight he stopped 6'8" 41-1 37KO's Tye Fields in the first round.

ANDRADE EXCITED ABOUT TURNING PRO

Demetrius Andrade closed one chapter of his boxing career in Beijing when the Providence welterweight lost a controversial, 11-9, quarterfinal bout to South Korea’s Kim Jung-Joo at the Summer Olympics.
On Sept. 6 he began writing another chapter when the 20-year-old world champion announced that he was turning pro. He signed a multiyear promotional undisclosed six-figure agreement with Artie Pelullo’s Banner Promotions and Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing. Pelullo and DeGuardia say that Andrade is the world’s best boxer turning pro this year.
Yesterday at a news conference at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, Andrade said that his first professional fight will be Oct. 23 in Airway Heights, Wash., on a nationally televised card headlined by the vacant featherweight title bout between Orlando Salido and Cristobal Cruz.
“It means the world to me,” Andrade said. “… It’s just another stepping stone in my life. Going to the Olympics was my dream. I always knew eventually I was going to turn pro, get all of the belts, and that’s just another dream I have and now I have to accomplish that dream.”

JUST ANOTHER DAY FOR TRIGG

Off the heels of his latest conquest in Japan, mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Frank Trigg (17-6) doesn’t seem too concerned about his next challenge, submission expert, Falaniko “Niko” Vitale (26-8).  In fact, Trigg’s seemingly nonchalant attitude toward the 185-pound limit matchup with Hawaii’s top talent could be mistaken for brash overconfidence.
“To me, it’s just another day for me,” said Trigg, a 2000 Olympic wrestling trials finalist and former UFC welterweight championship challenger who will battle Vitale in a featured Strikeforce “Payback” MMA contest at Broomfield, Colorado’s Broomfield Event Center on Friday, October 3rd.  “All of my days start to run together so I don’t have any thoughts about a particular fighter.”
When the subject of conversation turns to the state of his career, though, Trigg’s tone suddenly becomes more focused and intense. “I’ve only got a couple fights left so every fight is important to me.”
