ROBERT "The Ghost" GUERRERO:
The NEW IBF FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION
Returns to The Green Room
by Amy Green

The Ghost’s (19-1-1) hardware is piling up since we last had a chance to talk. Now he’s got possession of the NABF and IBF featherweight titles, and at age 23, is maturing into a definite world class champion. Guerrero firmly established himself as championship material, turning a December 2005 loss to Gamaliel Diaz into a learning experience by storming back to soundly rectify that loss June 23, and on September 2 at the Staples Center add another belt to his young resume by stopping Eric Aiken (16-5-0) in the eighth round of their title clash. Robert Guerrero took a vacation after gaining his new title and upon returning home to Gilroy, California, visited the Green Room to talk about his recent victories, his swiftly rising career and some very exciting news closer to the Guerrero home front.

Before congratulating Guerrero on his September 2 win, I learned he and wife Casey had even more important news to share: "We’re gonna have a boy," Guerrero announced, "He’s due February 20, and we’re going to name him Robert Guerrero Jr.," stated the proud father, whose daughter Savannah Rose is now 1 ½.
Robert Guerrero describes how being the owner two titles at age 23 feels. "Right now it’s kind of a daze, everything’s a blur. It still hasn’t sunk in so, it’s amazing!" he laughs.

The "blur" that has been his rapid rise to boxing success Guerrero says is defined by hard work, fighting a lot, being in the gym with trainer john Bray, and getting the right corner. "Working on everything I needed to work on to be able to compete at the championship level." Guerrero credits John Bray’s abilities with his success and growth as a fighter. "Getting a trainer like John that was able to teach me a lot of stuff to make the transition to be a true professional and not just have the amateur style. It took a lot of hard work. And a lot of training and a lot of focus to make that transition to a true professional fighter. "
Through that hard work Guerrero has realized a lot of personal growth and maturity which contributes greatly to his career. "Being responsible, being a true professional and taking care of business and being prepared for every fight and taking care of myself." he believes are part of the keys to his success.

The diligence Guerrero has employed during his career will enable him to pursue bigger and better things, hopefully in the near future. Like the 130-pound weight class. "God willing, everything goes great. I’d love to be in there with the best at 130 pounds- Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Manny Pacquiao, Rocky Juarez. In that category, fighting," Guerrero admits, and looks forward to the challenge of invading a larger weight class, "I’m a big featherweight, and I’d also be a big 130 pounder so I’d love to be in there in the mix with them, and fighting the best and giving the fights to the fans that they need."

The fans still have a chance to see Guerrero in the ring again before the end of this year. "Hopefully sometime soon, before the end of the year and having a title defense. I came out of the last fight uninjured, healthy, 100% ready to go again. My promotional team and my management team, they’re working on getting me back in the ring as soon as we can. For sure I’ll be in the ring by the end of 2006." Guerrero promises. (Early reports indicate a November 4 date, but that was yet to be confirmed at this writing.)

From the Diaz rematch until his dismantling of Eric Aiken, Guerrero has hardly slowed his pace, gaining momentum and making up for the December Diaz loss.
"I proved the fight with Diaz in December was just an off night and just kept the ball rolling and the momentum going." Guerrero stated.

And does he plan to keep the ball rolling, right through the 130-pound class? The young champion did not disappoint with his reply: "I’m gonna keep everything going and hopefully, 2007, God willing, I’ll be in there with them."

Until then, expect another year of action from Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero.
